UNION CREEK
Union Creek is an old
work center of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC).
The popular recreation area is situated on the Rogue Umpqua National
Scenic Byway (Crater Lake Highway 62), just
23 miles from Crater Lake National Park.
The
Union Creek Wayside, just south of the resort community,
provides a year-round rest stop with interpretive facilities for
travelers. The wayside was
designed and built with amenities geared for today's
traveling public, but evoking the character of the Forest Service from
decades past. A
footbridge across Union Creek from the new parking lot to the CCC era picnic
shelter and amphitheater has provided compatibility with the historic nature
of this area. Visitors will not
only have a first rate facility, but if they are observant, they will
discover details in the construction that evoke a sense of history that
arrived in Union Creek with the CCC's
during the Great Depression.
Surrounded
by the spectacular beauty of the Rogue River National Forest, the Union
Creek Resort invites visitors to experience the peace and serenity among the
tall pines in a truly secluded setting far from the crowds and the hectic
pace of everyday life.
A
favorite of such dignitaries as Zane Grey, Jack London and Herbert Hoover,
and built on the Crater Lake Trail used by pioneers as they crossed the
Cascade Mountains in search of a better life, the Union Creek Resort is
listed on the National Registry of Historic Places.
The
resort community, lodge, store, cabins, Beckie's Café and the ice cream shop all retain the original rustic look of
the early 1900's. The
Country Store & Gift Shop carries a complete selection of groceries,
bait, tackle, and one-day fishing license;
all snow park permits are available at the store.
In
summer, horseback riding and covered wagon rides are available for
individuals and groups. In
wintertime, snow tubing and sledding offer family fun at the nearby snow
park.
Union
Creek Amphitheater Campfire programs bring scheduled events each
Saturday evening from
July through Labor Day Weekend. Don't
be surprised if Smokey Bear is waiting to greet you.
